58th
District
Sobriety/Drug Treatment Court
The 58th
District
Sobriety/Drug Treatment Court began in
May of 2004. We target OWI-2nd
offenders, but also have participants who have other substance abuse related
offenses that carry a maximum one year jail sentence. We currently have
two
Sobriety/Drug Court dockets
with two different judges in our Holland court
location. We presently have 70
participants total and an estimated capacity of 75. Our program is a minimum of 18 months
long and we have had 12 graduates to date.
Both dockets are bilingual so we can accommodate Hispanic
participants.
We currently
use approximately half of the time of two probation officers as
Sobriety/Drug
Court case
managers. One of those probation
officers is bilingual and one treatment provider also has a bilingual
therapist. Both probation officers
do such a thorough job that the Drug Court Coordinator role primarily involves
conducting team meetings; promoting the program, grant writing, budget and
tweaking policies and procedures.
That role is filled by our Director of Probation and Community
Corrections. We hope to begin a
Sobriety/Drug
Treatment Court in our
Grand Haven location in 2006.
