The
54-A
Sobriety Court mission
is to enhance public safety and community welfare by reducing recidivism among
drug and alcohol offenders. The
mission is accomplished through an interdisciplinary approach including
intensive supervision, individualized treatment and personal accountability
monitored by frequent judicial review.
Participants must reside in the greater Lansing area, which
is defined as the clients ability to access local public transportation. This specialty Court focuses on
offenders facing a felony, third offense alcohol/driving charge. Participants enter the
Sobriety
Court with a
felony plea to OWI 3rd under a delayed sentence. Upon completion of the
Sobriety
Court, the
participant is sentenced to a reduced charge of OWI 2nd. The Sobriety Court
Probation officer supervises up to 20 participants for a maximum of 24 months,
structured in four phases. The 54-A District Court serves a diverse urban
population of 119,000 persons in Michigans capital
city. 54A Sobriety
Court staff
consists of one Judge and her staff, a Sobriety Court Coordinator and one part
time Probation Officer.
