Recovery
Court
If you are
apprehensive about starting a Drug
Court, consider
this:
Judge
Stephen Cooper was discouraged by local administrators from even considering a
Drug
Court because it
was too complicated and only a professional grant writer could get funding. After hearing from others all across the
country of how important their local drug courts were to them, he decided to try
his hand at grant writing. Several
successful federal and state grants later, Recovery
Court was
organized and opened for business in January, 2005. Recovery Court got its name
when the planning team assembled at its federally funded sessions and decided
that a positive name was important.
Recovery Court serves addicted residents of
Southfield,
Lathrup
Village,
Beverly
Hills, Bingham
Farms, Franklin. After a long
career as a probation officer, Cherie Kohl retired and was able to begin her
second career as the first Recovery Court Coordinator and Joe Goodrid was hired
as the Recovery Court Probation Officer.
They include home visits as part of their intensive supervision.
The program is blessed with the enthusiastic support and cooperation of
the wonderful professionals at Southfield Human Services, Jewish Family
Services, and Recovery Consultants who together provide a continuum of treatment
for each participant, supervision, transition housing, transportation,
assessment and testing. Each participant begins with a medallion to keep in
pocket or purse to remind them daily that the road to success is truly One Day At A Time and then they receive
incentives including a framed certificate as they begin each new phase. The
Southfield Foundation has been very supportive with awarding a grant and
assisting with fundraising. Court Administrator Donna Beaudet and the other 46th
District Court judges have been very supportive.
